Some bad Transformers fanfiction.
In 1986 I was seven years old, and totally obsessed with Transformers: the Movie and the post-movie cartoon episodes. My toys of the movie cast are pretty much the only childhood toys I still have (aside from LEGO, I am a LEGO maniac), and I think that whole experience with Transformers ended up being a significant moment in the development of my psyche.
Here is a post-movie "episode" I wrote a long time ago about Octane, the Decepticon smuggler who ended up working with the Autobots, if begrudgingly, in several post-movie episodes. I always loved this character, so it was fun to write as him, the Junkions, Cyclonus and the Sweeps, and so many of these other much-loved friends from another time.
The female Junkion in the story did actually appear on the show. I've included a screen capture for anyone who doesn't remember.
Anyway, I'm generally not a fanfiction person, but... enjoy! I've got a few of these around somewhere, might upload more later.
Oh yeah, and Happy Halloween! ^_^

Coolest Thing That Ever Happened
Gentle Reader,
This was probably the coolest thing that ever happened to me.
A friend and I went on a day trip to a small town about 30 miles away. Our primary purpose was to visit a friend's grave, as her birthday just passed. But on our way we happened across a late 50s/early 60s era motel near the side of the highway. We decided to check it out on our way back... and we were completely blown away by what we found.
First, here's what we saw when we pulled into the gravel driveway/courtyard space...
I'll be honest, it was a little spooky. But my curiosity about what waited inside was overpowering.
A look around the grounds...
And here's what we found... ALL THE VINTAGE FURNITURE AND APPLIANCES WERE STILL INSIDE!!!
At this point I felt an almost overwhelming urge to jimmy one of those ancient locks. But we were stopped short by the realization that the old motel office, which sits at the end of the row of cottages, is actually someone's house. A little research after the fact revealed that the motel owner's widow, who is in her 90s, still lives there. Once we realized that the place was occupied, we left right away, having no desire to frighten or bother anyone.
Okay, but aside from that... wow. I have wanted to find something like this my entire life. I would guess that the rooms have been shut up for at least 30 years, but they were in remarkably good shape. Yes, there was dust, and a few of the bedspreads showed evidence of creeping mold (especially beds next to windows). But the overall impression was of a cute, well-maintained, much-loved little motel. The people who closed it down at the end of the final season did so with care, perhaps thinking that they might reopen next year.
I'm not going to post a picture of the sign or reveal the name, in the interest of keeping the occupant from having unwanted visitors. But, upon googling the name, I was stunned to find that most sites list it as open despite the fact that it has clearly been shut up for decades. Only Yelp accurately listed it as closed. So... if you're passing through Nebraska perhaps you will find it unexpectedly while looking for a room. In which case you are in for one spooky shock, my friend!!!
I would just about kill for one of those alarm clocks or end tables. Maybe there will be an auction someday? I can only hope!
Ever Yours,
Fauntleroy

We approached and found that, while all of the doors were locked, most of the windows had open curtains, allowing an easy look inside.

Maleficent: My Review (Spoilers)
Gentle Reader,
I just saw it, and... I LOVED IT.
I'm not a Disneyphile, but I've always had a soft spot for the 1959 adaptation of Sleeping Beauty. It's so gorgeous and quirky, and Maleficent is a wonderful villain. I wasn't at all sure what I was going to think of this movie, especially after some of the rather murky reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. Honestly, I left the theater thinking that critics who said the story was too jumpy or vague must not have been paying close attention.
Yes, the visuals are stunning, but beyond that, the story has an emotional depth that took me by surprise. One thing you should know straight up: this movie is definitely NOT an attempt to show what was happening "off camera" during the original 1959 movie. It's actually an entirely new story, but with lots of overlapping elements. I was put off by this at first, but ultimately, I think it was the right choice. Yes, there are a lot of changes to the narrative, and yes, some classic elements of the original story are left out, but that's acceptable in a reboot, which is what this really is.
A few things I didn't like: 1.) The old white-haired king is Stefan's predecessor, not his best friend, and he is not the father of Prince Phillip. 2.) The names of the fairies were changed. The new names are cool and very suitable for fairies, but I thought they should at least be called Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather during the time that they are in disguise. 3.) Aurora's mother dies off-camera for no apparent reason. (Protip: living characters are more interesting than dead ones, so only kill them if there's some payoff in the story.)
The things I loved were too numerous to mention. For me, though, the best part is how they totally lampshaded the idea that Aurora and the prince could be in "true love" after one five minute meeting. Also, it's cool to think that a lot of this backstory, though certainly not all of it, is applicable to the Maleficent from the 1959 movie (and I'd argue that this is in fact the case, canonically speaking). It gives a lot of added depth to an already awesome character.
For me, the biggest moment of getting chills was when Lana Del Rey's version of "Once Upon a Dream" played, when the ending credits began, and I realized that, in this version of the story, the lyrics are actually about Aurora and Maleficent, not Aurora and the prince.
My rating: 4/5 stars. Go see it!

I GOT THE JOB!
So yeah! I got the job! ^_^
Now I have two weeks of normalcy to look forward to before I begin my amazing new career! So, if you've been waiting on things from me for, like, a month... 1.) My apologies! 2.) Watch for my communication to be back to normal after the weekend. This weekend is actually my best friend's birthday weekend, so I'll still be a bit tied up until Sunday night.
So happy! So exhausted!
Talk to ya later!

Where I've been...
If you follow this blog then you know that I try to keep it updated every month. So, where was I in April? Well, to make a long story short, I am up for what might be the job of a lifetime. It's been round after round of interviews and tests and now I'm in the final round. It is my impression that I'm the odds-on favorite although the decision has not yet been made.
The interview process has largely consisted of the creation and delivery of presentations to senior executives regarding hypothetical incentive programs for employees. I've had to develop these programs, document every step of how I would manage them, and then give a first-class presentation to senior management. It's been quite stressful and time consuming so all of my other projects are totally on hold for the moment. So... if you haven't heard from me and are still waiting on things... this is why!
Anyway, I'm hoping that I'll have an answer on all of this within the next 5-10 days. Wish me luck...!

(*gasp*) Why... it's Maleficent!
Gentle Reader,
I'm not a huge Disney fan, but I've always had a big soft spot for Sleeping Beauty.
I was pretty dubious about the whole concept of a movie based on Maleficent, especially once I heard that Angelina Jolie was cast in the title role (it just seemed like an odd fit). But, having seen this trailer, I am not only won over, but in fact OBSESSED with the whole thing. I can't wait!!!

Richard Dawkins
Gentle Reader,
Don't get me wrong, I have a huge <3 for Richard Dawkins and would probably make out with him. BUT...! I'm seriously wondering how in the fuck I never noticed this before:
ZOMG HE'S PROFESSOR COLDHEART FROM CARE BEARS!!!
IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW.

Who do people do this?
Gentle Reader,
I had a really bad day and got some really bad news. By this evening I was feeling very upset and stressed out during the time that I'm supposed to be trying to relax and working on the projects that bring some meaning into my life.
So, I check my YouTube inbox and I have a message from someone I've never interacted with before. This person says that they saw on another website how another person was really trashing me. Now, I'm not completely naive. I had a feeling right off that it might be a spam message, and sure enough, it was (the link provided connects to a survey page that installs malware). The thing is, the message said, among other things, "Somebody out there must really hate you." That is just such a bad, bad, bad thing to read in an anonymous message written in a concern-troll type of voice. It's like, getting kicked in the teeth when you're already down. What a horrible, horrible way to trick someone into clicking your link.
I will never understand spammers. I will never understand trolls. I will never understand people.

Bigotry and Pigotry on Parade
LOOK AT THE FIRST AND LAST STORIES IN MY GOOGLE NEWS FEED.
THIS IS THE PROBLEM, PEOPLE.
THE DUCK DYNASTY FAMILY IS RICH, POWERFUL, CONNECTED, AND SAFE. THEIR ABILITY TO LIVE AND BELIEVE AS THEY CHOOSE IS IN NO JEOPARDY. I’M SO VERY SORRY THAT THEY’RE HAVING TO LEAN ON THEIR FAITH DURING THESE “TOUGH TIMES.”
MEANWHILE, GAYS CAN BE IMPRISONED OR WORSE, JUST FOR BEING GAY, IN MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD.
GIVING A MEGAPHONE TO A HOMOPHOBE EMBOLDENS HOMOPHOBES EVERYWHERE. IT ISN’T “JUST AN OPINION.” PEOPLE ARE HURT. PEOPLE DIE. CALL OUT BIGOTRY WHEREVER YOU SEE IT. WE ARE WINNING THE WAR, BUT WE CAN’T STOP NOW. FIGHT ON!

SO FRUSTRATED!
I've got so many things that I want to DO! I've got stories that I want to write. I want to make video games. I'd kill to make a graphic novel. But HOW DO YOU DO IT!? HOW do you break out of the workaday life and into that other life? HOW I ASK YOU, HOW!?

Sorry.
Gentle Reader,
I've been basically absent from the blog since the release of Version 2.0 of the General Leo Edition hack. Not to go into a big story or anything, but I went out of town for a bit and now I am working on a really exciting new career opportunity. Mia apologia to everyone who has been waiting for an e-mail reply, as well as the comments on the blog that had gone unanswered. My bad!!! But I'm back now!
By the way, I started a tumblr account as a complement to this blog. You can find it here:
The Mercy of Callouses on tumblr
Do any of my readers have their own tumblr accounts? Let me know if ya do!
The nice thing about a "micro-blog" like tumblr is that I can post things quickly without having to invest too much time into it, including when I'm on the road. It was also the perfect home for some GIF sets I made but that Blogspot just couldn't display as intended. Still, that doesn't mean I'm going to forget about this site, which is still my main sounding board and jumping off point for major projects.
So again, mea culpa to all and to all a good night, and thanks again for following my wackiness and bizarre activities.

Siobhan Fahey
I think that Siobhan Fahey is quite possibly the most beautiful woman in the entire world. The fact that she looks the way she does at 55 years of age is... it's just amazing.
55 is the new 40. I'm hoping that it will be the new 30 by the time I get there, ha ha.
