Bigotry and Pigotry on Parade

LOOK AT THE FIRST AND LAST STORIES IN MY GOOGLE NEWS FEED.

THIS IS THE PROBLEM, PEOPLE.

THE DUCK DYNASTY FAMILY IS RICH, POWERFUL, CONNECTED, AND SAFE.  THEIR ABILITY TO LIVE AND BELIEVE AS THEY CHOOSE IS IN NO JEOPARDY.  I’M SO VERY SORRY THAT THEY’RE HAVING TO LEAN ON THEIR FAITH DURING THESE “TOUGH TIMES.”

MEANWHILE, GAYS CAN BE IMPRISONED OR WORSE, JUST FOR BEING GAY, IN MANY PARTS OF THE WORLD.

GIVING A MEGAPHONE TO A HOMOPHOBE EMBOLDENS HOMOPHOBES EVERYWHERE.  IT ISN’T “JUST AN OPINION.”  PEOPLE ARE HURT.  PEOPLE DIE.  CALL OUT BIGOTRY WHEREVER YOU SEE IT.  WE ARE WINNING THE WAR, BUT WE CAN’T STOP NOW.  FIGHT ON!

  1. I find people's blind hatred of people for something outside severe character flaws...disturbing.

To be clear, bigotry is a severe character flaw. Homosexuality is not.

  2. What's even sadder? I went home to Texas for the holidays. I'd barely even heard of Duck Dynasty, knew basically nothing about it. Not a day off the plane, I started hearing about the Duck Dynasty disaster. I was in Texas for two weeks. It. Never. Stopped. My family was screaming, all up in arms DEFENDING this character. I was...upset, to say the least. They even know that I'm bisexual, and they STILL want to defend this guy. I tried to put it aside and enjoy the holidays as best I could, but it just came up too many times, especially on New Year's Eve with everyone getting drunk (nothing like alcohol to bring out the best in us, eh? This is why I never touch the stuff, and certainly wasn't about to that night). It frightens me that they use Freedom of Speech as a defense for speaking and spreading hatred. I'm appalled, to say the least. It was a long two weeks...
can I just ask these religious people one question: What ever happened to "Love Thy Neighbor"? When did it become "Love thy neighbor, unless their religious beliefs don't perfectly align with yours, in which case burn them at the stake and damn them, calling them heathens"? When did THIS happen? Oh wait. I think that's been around for a while. *rolls eyes*
First world religious problems. If I dare to coin such a phrase. But yes.
I'm just...I'm baffled, I'm hurt, I'm angry, I'm uncertain what to think of my family, at this rate. Just when I thought they were accepting me and things were all good, this happens. They didn't attack me directly or anything, but knowing they support something like this, and don't even have the sense or manners to acknowledge how I'd obviously feel about it as well as their opinions on it just...
I don't care if this dude is some Southern bible-thumper that "doesn't know any better" or whatever. Upbringing may or may not be a factor, but that doesn't justify something like this. Just what did WE ever do to that guy?
I'm sorry to rant, rave, and ramble on like this, but after being stuck in Texas for two weeks, having to quietly allow people to freak out over the fact that some jerk-ass said things he shouldn't have and almost caught flak for it and thus "should be defended", I have to let at least some of this out. I'm not happy...I'm really not.
I can only hope that one day, there -will- be peace, love, tolerance, and understanding for the children of the world...I can at least hope. Because I know it's not an impossible dream.
