  1. Hey, I had a brief question for you.

Why do you think Cecil's Dark Wave was removed from the SFC/SNES version of FF4?

It's the distinguishing feature of the class; all other classes have unique abilities.

The scene where the newly acquired Paladin Cecil faces off against his other self is especially jarring as the Dark Knight unleashes wave after wave of this unknown ability.

My logic seems to dictate that it was removed to accomodate a novice audience in that using the ability, while cool looking, is best reserved for certain situations since it has a fairly hefty hp cost.

Your hack got me thinking about this. I also wonder if the Dark Cecil you fight in the hall of mirrors loses HP as he uses it...

Hope all is going well with you, Fauntleroy. I've never completed any Phantasy Star game and look forward to this!

    1. Hey Arcs, thanks for your comment! To answer your question, I suspect that Dark Wave was removed so that a novice player cannot accidentally kill off Cecil, who is the only party member at several points during the game. I think this was pretty silly, since even a novice player should be able to figure out that using the ability has a cost. My understanding is that the Dark Knight enemy at Mt. Ordeals does in fact lose HP each time he uses the ability. Hence, the player "should" know to just parry until the Dark Knight's HP runs out. Removing the ability from the game kinda messed up the intent behind the scene.
